What a dreadful week it has been. Fear permeates the world, it seems no where is safe from terrorism. Those of us of a certain age remember what it was like not knowing where to turn in case of bombs and bullets, I mean that literally. In towns and villages a heartbeat could change life. Now lying on a beach or worshiping in your own place of peace or going into your office for another day of routine work can and does end up in bloodshed. Again we must be on our guard at home and on holiday. Sadly two more generations are now facing what we faced in the 70s and 80s. One of my grandsons, aged 6, said to me last week: ‘We’ll not watch news today Granny, it’s too brutal.’
It’s sad that work going on in Northern Ireland aimed at bringing people together, people from different ethnic backgrounds or religions, has been threatened by cuts to the budget. People can’t live on fresh air, volunteering is admirable but, unless you have a source of finance already, you must at least have money to cover expenses. The budget for reconciliation should be bottomless. Cut assembly expenses, salaries and entertaining and look out over Northern Ireland and see where support is really needed and please boys and girls, get on with it. Don’t let us go down the tubes again because of this attitude of what we have we hold.
We need a President Obama. Did you see him at the funeral of Rev. Clementa Pinckney? His oration was chillingly beautiful, every word was measured, his slow reading of the names of the eight partitioners like Rev. Pinckney, shot to death in their church in Charleston South Carolina, powerful. Then after a long pause, his face so wracked with pain, he began to sing Amazing Grace. The Home Coming
There’s great excitement in Co. Donegal at the moment as people await the arrival of St. Conall’s Bell and Shrine. From Saturday 4th to 13th July Portnoo will be the centre of celebration for this home coming, Although the Bell and Shrine have been residing in the Donegal Museum in Letterkenny since mid June, they will only arrive in their home place on the Monday for one day before being transported back to the British Museum. Sadly it will be impossible to actually cross to the Island of Inniskeel and the site of the monastery because the tides don’t allow, so they’ll be displayed at the Dolmen Centre Kilclooney a few minutes away from the strand and the Island of their birth.
Two people will be especially moved by the event, Brenda Mahon and Claudia McGinley. It was Brenda’s husband Malachy who was the moving force behind bringing the artefacts back to this idyllic part of Donegal, he contacted the curator at the British Museum to remark that the Bell and Shrine had been to Philadelphia but never home to Inniskeel, why not? Brenda tells me: “The answer was – you never asked!” So, two years ago, the wheels were set in motion and Malachy’s dream became a reality, they were coming home. Sadly, he won’t be there to welcome them as this dedicated man, retired headmaster of Mary’s College Irvinestown, Co. Fermanagh, died in March.
Claudia’s special interest centres round the island itself as her grand parents lived there for many years. Her father and uncle, John and Richard Barrett, remember as children the days when they’d bring back eggs and potatoes to the mainland to sell and in spring planting the seed potatoes in the rich soil where once stood the monastery founded by St. Conall fifteen hundred years ago. Obviously it has a special place in her heart and as one of the co-ordinators of the homecoming Claudia worked closely with Malachy and Brenda to bring this to fruition.
