I’m sure Peter Quigley would be delighted with the outpouring of affection from his friends and fans following his death this week. Face Book was alive with messages of shock and sadness, one of the first from Candy Devine in Australia: “Northern Ireland’s theatre goers mourn the loss of another favourite son of the Arts, Peter Quigley. Our paths first crossed in the Lyric Theatre production of The Threepenny Opera. You fought a great fight Peter now rest in peace.”
Like Candy, Peter was special to all of us, a mercurial character dashing from one thought to another, from one project to the next yet stable in his friendships and secure in his promises. He touched so many lives in all realms of theatre, as an actor, a writer, a producer and a director. He was fun all his life.
It was always a joy to meet Peter either in the theatre or on Botanic Avenue where we seemed destined to bump into each other and after updating the lives of mutual friends and exchanging all the gossip, it was excited talk about Peter’s latest venture. Our last meeting was in February at the Courtyard Theatre in Newtownabbey where he was directing Nuala McKeever in ‘Talking Heads’. He discussed the show in detail, explained his innovative take on the Alan Bennett monologues – his wide eyed enthusiasm his trademark.
We worked together many times on Ulster Actors productions 30 years ago and when I wanted some cooperation for a press call or an interview, Peter was always there happy to help. I especially remember him as Emcee in ‘Cabaret’ with the Ulster Actor’s Company at the Arts Theatre, he embraced the part and reprised this character many times since. Always challenging life, not long ago he broke new ground at the MAC Theatre and touring in ‘Tuesdays at Tescos’, exploring issues of a transgender woman in the role of Pauline. A very moving piece of theatre.
On Face Book at the beginning of May, Peter complained of a stomach ‘malfunction’ and his resulting illness was short and devastating.
Some reckon he’s dressed to the nines and sipping cocktails with Joan Crawford or Marlene Dietrich, I like to think he’s reunited with Leila Webster a woman of the theatre and a lady he loved, in fact with his hairdressing training he faithfully dressed Leila’s hair every week and before her public appearances. Typical, a generous and gifted man.
So many tributes and memories.
“A generation of actors owe you a great debt …”, “You made me believe in myself …”, “A true inspiration to all the young people he lead to the stage..” Apparently only a few days before he died in hospital, surrounded by his closest friends, Peter, in full makeup, recited ‘Helas’, Oscar Wildes’s tragic and beautiful love poem, his voice at first weak but captivating, strengthening as he spoke. As in the poem, Peter Quigley surely trod the sunlit heights.
Tragedy in California

Charlie and his wife had lost their only son and for them the outpouring of grief from friends, and the public was a comfort. From the highest in the land they came, the kettle was always on the boil and food on the table in thoughtful celebration of the 21 year old who made such an impact in his short life. He played football for Leitrim, was in the middle of a media course at college and like his father, loved music. Before heading off for the summer to work and to play football in Boston, the two attended a Galway verses Roscommon game and at the end Charlie hugged his son not knowing it was for the last time. Shane’s name lives on in sport especially, in Foundations to help young sports people in Boston and in Drumshanbo’s Shane McGettigan Memorial Park.
Without doubt the love and the pride is still there in abundance and now there are grandchildren who know their uncle Shane through photographs and conversation and Charlie’s own very personal songs.
It’s a sad and tragic thing that bad workmanship can result in such dreadful events stealing away the precious lives of young men and women on the very edge of adulthood, never to know what life holds for them, robbing other young people of their friendship and above all, parents of their dear children.
Remembered Through Linen
Many and varied have been the tributes and memorials to those who died or were injured as a result of The Troubles, even to this day there’s controversy about the definition of ‘victim’ and who qualifies for financial help when left disabled and in distress.
There is, however, one very visual memorial that remembers all those who lost their lives during 40 dreadful years and to date it has been seen throughout Northern Ireland and tomorrow, on the morning of Monday 22nd June, during The Day of Reflection, this touring installation – The Linen Memorial – comes to the Long Gallery at Stormont before fulfilling further invitations in the future. The sponsor for this event is Mike Nesbitt MLA, leader of the Ulster Unionist Party and he has his reasons for supporting this venture. “Firstly, art is often under-rated as a tool for helping us in dealing with the past and its legacy,” he told me. “Secondly, people get a kick from seeing their work on display at Parliament Buildings and thirdly, I was attracted by the fact the material was linen, because as a young man I was destined to be the third generation of the Nesbitt family to manage the linen business my grandfather established in central Belfast, only for the business to disappear on the 25th of January 1973, blown away by the IRA.”
This Linen Memorial is the work of Lycia Trouton who has taken her information from the Lost Lives Names List from 1966 to 2006. Although her family left Belfast for Canada when she was a child and she has gone on to travel the world as a noted artist and sculptor, the impact of what was going on in her home town and Northern Ireland in general had a profound effect on her. Following a visit to Belfast in the late 90’s she developed the idea of producing her own tribute, a curtain of delicate linen squares, each one dated and each one carrying the embroidered names of men, women and children who lost their lives.
I first saw this remarkable peace wall in St. Catherine’s Dominican Church in Newry where a steady stream of people came to search for the names of family or friends and so find some peace of mind following the personal time of turbulence and heartache that each name represents.
There are 400 squares, each holding a number of names, nearly 4000 in total, carefully stitched, white on creamy white giving an almost ghostly effect. It’s a very moving experience and a thoughtful touch at Stormont will be a quiet room nearby there church, spiritual and Samaritan representatives will be on hand to offer comfort.
Last year in Newry, one women was remembering her friend who’d left her handbag in a restaurant, went back to get it and was killed when a bomb went off inside the the little cafe. Another was looking for the name of a young man she remembered meeting and shaking his hand only hours before he was blown to smithereens when planting a bomb. Someone was searching for the names of the hunger strikers while another woman said: “There was no need for it, aren’t they are all together now anyway and in a better place.”
The conversations too were interesting: “Reminds you of World War 1 and World War II, then The Troubles and what has been accomplished?” “You’ve got to remember Albert Reynolds,” answered one man, “At least he got things moving, that’s what he accomplished.”
Some knew the month, some only had a name but systematically Lycia looked in the Lost Lives book for a reference and then pinpointed the embroidered name.
I noticed there were three names under 1966, none in ’67 or’68 then came 18 names in ’69 and so it built from there. The names on the delicate squares cover all backgrounds and traditions and are a graphic reminder of a terrible time and the escalation of death.
As I left, a sad comment from a gentle 88 year old with 20 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren and one of the way, “All walks of life,” she observed as she contemplated the Memorial, what memories she must have. Almost under her breath another profound point was from a much younger woman with her: “The sadness is that the people responsible for all this killing will never come into this house of God.” Who knows? The Linen Memorial of Peace will affect many people as it travels round the world.
Although this event in the Long Gallery is by invitation only, when it leaves Stormont after lunchtime, the memorial will move to the Docks Honesty Cafe in the Titanic Quarter where it is open to the public and there will be an opportunity to meet and talk to Lycia between 3 p.m. and 5 o’clock.
