I’ve recently had a new hard drive fitted to my laptop. Apparently super dooper, all singing, all dancing and with a mind of its own. Problem is he – I think it must be a male hard drive – decides to change words. If he doesn’t recognise what I’ve typed he simply corrects it to what he thinks it should be. I will be monitoring this closely and making notes. He had better watch his ps and qs.

The holiday season is fast approaching, exams almost over, suitcases taken down from the roof space and mums will be making lists.

Isn’t it strange how before going on holiday you think, ‘I’ll get in shape, lose some weight and get fit and really enjoy my time and fit into – if not the bikini – at least a t-shirt and shorts! But time ticks and suddenly you’re packing. Ah well, I’ll use the couple of weeks to chill out, stick to lovely salads and fruit and come home svelte and tanned. But the sun shines and you drink sugar filled soft drinks, wine, sangria and nibble. However, all will be well when you get home, a new start a real regime of self-control. And so it goes one. Did you ever notice that the Roman numerals for 40 are XL!

It doesn’t get any easier and life is full of good intensions and time ticks. As my friend says, there’s a lot to be thankful for, just think, wrinkles don’t hurt and a little plumpness fills out those laughter lines. Still I will persist before, during and after the holidays. And here’s one for your men. As time ticks, first you forget names, then you forget faces. Then you forget to pull up your sipper. It’s even worse when you forget to pull it down!

It’s been exactly a year since I first met Martha Goulding and her daughters and for me it was great catching up this week. Last June Sheila was a sensitive child only 14 and still at school, Peggy worked for Mr. Goldstein in his Royal Avenue record shop and Irene, the eldest, had taken up work in Short Brothers and Harland. Now I discover she’s just home from honeymoon in Bangor where she and her RAF husband enjoyed dancing in Caproni’s and swimming at Pickie Pool. Pat still has a responsible job at Stormont and the four girls are the apples of Martha’s eye, a widow living in Joanmount Gardens in North Belfast where she makes ends meet after the sudden death of her husband.
I should explain, they were living in 1939 and in Martha’s Girls there was talk of war and there was unrest in Belfast between Catholics and Protestants, it was a difficult time but worse was to come.
And now it has come. Now it’s 1941 and In retired head teacher Alrene Hughes second book, The Golden Sisters, the family story continues. In fact this is the story of Alrene’s own family because these characters are based on her grandmother, her mother and her aunts and much of the material has been gleaned from family scrap albums and chats with the original Goulding girls before they died.
The Blitz has hit, bombs fall, a thousand fires burn throughout Belfast, streets are filled with bricks and belongings from the houses lying in ruins but worst of all are the dead and injured being pulled from the rubble. 20,000 homeless and people are fleeing to safety on the Cave Hill, Black Mountain and the Holywood Hills. Martha has volunteered to help families identify bodies lying in rows of coffins in St. George’s Market and Pat has brought home news from Stormont, The Ministry of Public Security has ordered the building be painted with pitch and cow dung for camouflage purposes because it gleams white in the moonlight and is a point of reference for the German bombers.
It’s fascinating to accompany these girls through their adventures, the heartache of young Sheila being evacuated to Dungannon, Irene and Sandy settling on the Ballyhalbert air base, ambitious Peggy and the Plaza Ballroom experience with Devlin and Pat’s love of William and their clandestine visit to Dublin as representatives of the Stormont Government and William’s apparent attempts to gain support to ‘relieve the suffering of the people in the north’.
A tangled web with Martha in the middle holding the find threads that bind her family together, each personality matures yet they are still her children. In the attic they find the long skipping rope their father had brought home from the shipyard, it had a funny smell, a mixture of tar and the sea but it still worked and, just as when they were little the girls, they stretched the rope across the road and gradually neighbourhood children and women gathered to join in, skipping and singing, a happy evening of innocence in the midst of chaos and air raid warnings.

Alrene – her mother was Irene and her father Alex – was born in Enniskillen and lives in Manchester but when I talked to her she was relaxing in the Greek sunshine! “Great place to write,” she told me, I bet! “I’ve just shut down the computer, third book underway and it will take the family up to VE Day. I enjoyed writing about them,” she added, “it came quickly because I remember them talking about those days and how they sang throughout the war. I can hear them now, how they spoke to each other when I was growing up, hearing their stories and their laughter.”
With meticulous research the writer has brought Belfast to life during those terrifying war years. Mr. Goldstein’s ‘Barnstormers’, a troupe of local entertainers where the Golden Girls had star roles, all the sisters could sing and sing well and their progress to the top was swift despite their individual traumas. Her descriptions and references are lovely, ‘the sky glowed pink not the colour of dawn but of disaster’, the bombers moon, Buttermilk Loney Ballysillan, the wartime philosophy ‘Make do and Mend’ and their happy trip to ‘Bangor and Back for a Bob.’ Fascinating is the mission to Dublin by Pat and William on behalf of the British Government which in fact was to negotiate the end of Irish neutrality and allow navel bases within its borders, Churchill’s carrot being the prospect of a United Ireland.
Fascinating too is the visit of George Formby to the Empire Theatre, the Americans arriving in Northern Ireland, Langford Lodge and Glen Millar orchestra playing in the American Red Cross Services Club in the Plaza. Central to all these are the Golden Sisters. their love affairs and the heartbreaks, the fall outs, the temptations and the dangers.
Not often a book leaves you humming a tune, this one does, Don’t Sit Under the Apple Tree, String of Pearls, Cheek to Cheek, This is the Army Mr. Jones, these girls sang them all to cheer up the people of beleaguered Belfast, in concert halls and the American bases set up around the country.
Martha’s daughters, the Golden Sisters, and Alrene’s real family, certainly made their mark.

The Lighthouse Trust Summer School is almost upon us.  For children from all over Ireland this means freedom, fun and stimulation.  For instance, Katie Trotter will be 12 years of age in July and it will be a day of family celebration. She’s a special girl who over the last five years has been a pupil at the  Summer School and, according to her dad Bob, the experience has been a joy.
“Katie was hit by a respiratory bug when she was four and a half months old, her lungs collapsed and she had to be flown to Glasgow on a life support machine. She took multiple bleeds on the left side of her brain and became hemiplegic.” This resulted in the right hand side of her little body being severely weakened and the brain damage had devastating results leaving Katie unable to live life as do her able bodied friends.
The family have done everything possible to give Katie an opportunity to improve her condition and that includes ‘conductive education’ developed by Andras Peto in Hungary, a type of education developed mainly for children and young people with cerebral palsy in order to develop their potential – physically, socially and intellectually.

This is the 19th year of this unique school where in July and August children face the challenge of every day life with the help of summer school staff, volunteers and families. Bob and his wife Lorna are very involved as is their 14 year old daughter Hannah. “Hannah doesn’t see disability, she sees children. She’s devoted to Katie, indeed she intends making a career in special needs.”
July is for teenagers and in August it’s the turn of the younger children to have fun during intensive days of exercises designed to assist co-ordination.
“It’s made a big difference, Katie has come on physically and mentally. We’d given up on her walking but one day, on the last day of the school, Marianne said, ‘I’ve a surprise, stay there’. She disappeared out of the room only to come back a few minutes later holding Katie’s hand and our daughter was walking. We cried, we were overwhelmed and it was the beginning of some independence for our daughter. She still needs to walk holding hands for balance and although we use a wheelchair, she likes to leave it behind and be as self reliant as possible.”

One of the delights of Donaghadee is the attitude of the local people. Joan Bruton, from Co. Kildare and instrumental in setting up the school, has long experience as her son Thomas has been a pupil since its inception. 25 year old Thomas will be at this year’s summer school as he’d working towards his Gold Gaisce Award, the equivalent of the Duke of Edinburgh Award. “Often when we’re out and our son is in his wheelchair he might as well be invisible but in Donaghadee people want to talk to him, they want to concentrate on the children so our outings are always special. We’re a small organisation carefully managed with trustees, a management committee, qualified staff, two senior assistants, a caterer, volunteers and, of course, the families. We all work together as a team, knowing there’s no cure for cerebral palsy but determined to promote confidence and self-esteem by working on the children’s potential whilst recognising their limitations. ”

Strict child protection is guaranteed with staff, volunteers and parents all being checked out. This means events and visits can be undertaken safely and usually it’s up to the pupils to choose what to do, it could be ice skating, sailing, barbecuing perhaps open air theatre in the walled garden in Bangor or a visit from an illusionist, always popular! The Church of Ireland parish hall is the centre for around 18 children from all parts of Ireland. Here every aspect of their day is educational – including eating out, sitting at the table, toileting, art or speech therapy – and all these are models for the families to carry on this education at home or in special needs classes for the rest of the year. Therapists from Clifton School in Bangor where Katie is a pupil also attend the summer school.

It costs £1000 for the four week school tuition with parents being responsible for finding accommodation, usually grants and sponsorship help with the cost. But above all fundraising is vital in order to keep the school open with places available for the pupils. Bob Trotter is an avid fundraiser, an expert at car boot sales who laments that BBC Children in Need used to give a donation but not any more. Undoubtedly the summer school is close to his heart and he loves telling people about the Lighthouse Trust and Katie’s progress.
“She’s the happiest wee child,” he says. “Her motor skills have improved, from gross motor skills like holding a large ball, to fine skills, like holding a spoon between her thumb and finger. At one time Katie would shuffle across the floor on her bottom banging into anything in her way, now thanks to this conductive education she can calculate where she is and what to do. There’s no doubt, like her school colleagues, when she makes progress physically, stretching muscles and stimulating the brain, she makes progress mentally. A remarkable and valuable summer school. Absolutely marvellous.”
