Colleague Frances Burscough wrote in the Telegraph Weekend magazine yesterday that this is International Dawn Chorus Day so she would be up with the lark and tuning into the dawn chorus. She explained how she used to wire up her tape recorder and at sunrise turn on and record the dawn chorus. She classisfies herself as a ‘nurd’. Well Frances, I join you in that club, I too am a nurd. I used to do the same thing and sing the French folk song: “I see from out my window the lilac blooming fair, and there amongst its blossom, come birds a-nesting there, from East and West come flying, from mountain, moor and stream, Oh carol your gladness, sing a roundelay, lay, lay, Oh carol your gladness and sing to me today. So I had the joy of my corncrake voice and the bird song all on one take. What did the neighbours think!
Sadly, I have to admit to sleeping in this morning. I have an excuse. At 3.30 I was listening to Floyd Mayweather fight Manny Pacquiao.
In retrospect I’m sorry my clock wasn’t set for the sunrise instead, maybe tomorrow.
“Very Shortly”
What a long day yesterday turned out to be. Rain, rain and more rain and the dragged out coverage of the royal baby. I must say I had sympathy with the anti-monarchist who took issue with the time and money spent standing in front of St. Mary’s Hospital, standing in front of Buckingham Palace and the helicopter ride following William driving home to Kensington Palace although the shots of the trees in various shades of spring green were lovely. I agreed with him that asking royalists how pleased they were/what did they think the name would be/did they think George would be excited etc etc. Not much on the news channel yesterday about Nepal or anything else.
Having said that, congratulations to our own Anita McVeigh who kept up the commentary, got excited when William arrived with George, asked questions of the crowds, and royal correspondent Nick Witchell who said he was taken by surpise by the short ‘process’, and in general kept our attention. Every time I tuned in there she was looking relaxed and happy despite the cold and saying “very shortly” a lot.
For stickability she gets my vote. I organised a charity entertainment company some years ago where media types, singers from Castleward Opera and couple of actors enacted an Olde Thyme Christmas Evening entertainment. In amongst the choruses, the songs, the readings and the stories under the guidance of Master of Ceremonies John Jordan from the Opera House, we presented the short melodrama ‘Maria in the Red Barn’. Anita was a superb Maria and Noel Thompson was the villainous squire what done it!

His CV is long and impressive and his future is bright. Certainly his music today was full of statements, whispers, sometimes playful, other times stern. There were deep troughs between the great waves of music and the final chords rocked the hall.
Colm Carey also played works buy Simon Preston, Felix Mendelssohn Dan Locklair and Naji Hakim. It was a varied programme with a Eucharist spiritual theme and just right for an hour of escapism in the magnificent hall. Why more people weren’t there I don’t know, perhaps if there was a sign on the pavement inviting people in it would help. There is a lot of passing trade completely unaware of the lunch time concerts although the Ulster Orchestra events gather bigger audiences. The Belfast City Organist is special with a great rapport with the audience. When he puts on his ballet shoes it’s not to pirouette round the Ulster Hall, it’s to play the Mulholland organ because, so sensitive is the contact between the pedalboard and his feet, the thinner the sole the better and this acclaimed musician is a perfectionist. I learned so much from chatting to Colm prior to his premier performance of David Coonan’s commissioned work, Jesus Christus, unser Heiland last Friday at one o’clock. In a break in rehearsals Colm talked Mulholland. “Did you know that organs reflect the country of their birth? A bit like wine, each has its own voice. In Germany their tone is precise and guttural. In France bold and theatrical, Spain colourful and pungent and our own Mulholland organ, resident in the Ulster Ball Belfast, is a monster in the English style!” For me this is the most fascinating instrument there is, pipes and manuals, pedals and stops; along with the clock it was considered one of the most complex human-made mechanical creations before the Industrial Revolution in the late 1700s. it’s like driving a super sonic air craft, it can roar yet it can purr. “There are quiet colours in her palate as well a dark shades, more than just loud and soft, more than light and shade. Some people can hear in colour,” he adds, “a lovely condition called synesthesia.” I was gaining knowledge from the best man possible.
Colm recommends listening to music with your eyes closed to cut out any distractions and to enhance the images that come to mind. Music is an adventure to this man who grew up in Dublin then lived in Cork in a house filled with melodic sound. When his father was appointed Dean of St. Finbars Cathedral in Cork young Colm sang in the choir and his mother was always playing music so it wasn’t surprising it has became so important in his life. But why the organ? “Why not!” He loves music, not all music but as he says, he can’t stand raw tomatoes and that doesn’t mean everyone else is the same, people have their preferences and his are wide. “I don’t see music as pleasant or unpleasant rather as an experience. Give it a chance, stretch yourself and your appreciation of music.” We are usually introduced to the organ in church with hymns and anthems but that’s only a small and relatively simple example of this instrument. “However, it doesn’t matter what size the organ is, it’s the construction that’s important.” Colm has ‘driven’ organs all round the world, he has broadcast and recorded and he was the featured organist on Paul McCarney’s classical album Ecce Cor Meum which premiered at the Carnegie Hall in New York in 2006. “I talked to him at the reception afterwards which was a pleasure as I have tremendous respect for him as a musician, probably the most famous in the world.” He admitted he was quite chuffed when his mobile phone rang one day in the Ulster Hall and it was McCartney himself! Colm’s enthusiasm knows no bounds. He has accompanied silent black and white movies in the Ulster Hall, he presents music programmes for radio, appears on television often with the Ulster Orchestra, performs to audiences around the world including the Queen. He is Master of Music at the Chapels Royal in the Tower of London, playing mostly in the ‘young’ chapel renovated by Henry the VIII and where the bodies of Thomas More, Anne Boleyn, Catherine Howard and Lady Jane Grey lie in the crypt. Under his direction the choir sings during the weekly services in the Chapels as well as for special events. One of his favoured memories is rehearsing at the organ in an empty Westminster Abbey, just him and the organ built by William Hill in 1848 a few years before he came to Belfast to build our revered instrument. Above all Colm Carey is an ambassador for Mulholland. He speaks of her with love, he is responsible for her welfare and her maintenance and champions the open access policy which means schools and civic groups can appreciate the hall and the organ up close and organ pupils can go along and stretch their knowledge along with their hands and feet. Colm has a huge knowledge of his music and his instrument and they have taken him to most countries: “What you bring to your music reflects the life that you have lived so the more experience the better.”
Then it was back to meticulous rehearsals for Fridays concert and the Coonan premier. “A challenging piece in three movements,” but he promises, “it will be fun to play.” And it was stimulating to listen to and exciting to accept the invitation to meet the young composer after the performance. Decisions Decisions
Looking forward to My English Tongue, My Irish Heart on Tuesday written and directed by Martin Lynch. Green Shoot Productions might well have lost funding but they are undaunted, the shows will go on.
Didn’t take me long to decided not to run the marathon tomorrow but great good luck to all who do take on the challenge. The next challenge for me is Thursday. Voting has never been more difficult. Someone asked me – do you vote for the person or the party? I don’t know but I feel like supporting the person who has done most for the area but not someone who is fundamental in their views. Not sure what that leaves me! I suspect nothing much will change here in Northern Ireland so my concentration will be on the Cameron Miliband tussel. After Shadow of a Gunman at the Lyric Theatre I will come home, write a review and then settle down in front of the telly and see what transpires. We’ll know this time next week.
