Today 700, last week 440. More than the capacity of the Grand Opera House. Imagine all those people ending up floating in the sea, drowned and yet at 9 a.m. on BBC Five Live news the top story was the selling of shares in Lloyds bank followed by election updates. How skewed up are we. These men, women and children are leaving their homes for a reason, unless you had a good reason would you put your belongings into a small bag and subject yourself to the dangers and the discomfort of such a sea journey, putting your children at such risk? Last year 3500 didn’t make it, this year, and before todays news, 900 died, drowned, eaten by sharks; few escape such a dreadful happening. Spare a thought.
The Eye of the Beholder Two very different theatrical events last week, ‘Lally the Scut’ at the MAC Theatre and ‘I Banquo’ at the Lyric. The appreciation of theatre is like everything else in life, it’s in the eye of the beholder, some will like what others do not like and that’s the stimulation of entertainment, that’s why when I review a show I feel it only fair that I take a straw poll of the audience rather than giving my opinion alone.
The Inside Story
I was surprised that so many people turned their backs on the brilliant sunshine last Friday lunchtime to spend an hour in a theatre. The Lyric was the theatre, ‘I Banquo’ was the one man show and the one man was actor Michael Patrick. And believe me, we were not disappointed. Enter the darkened auditorium of the Naughton Studio, a table, a bucket and a corpse lying on the floor covered in a white sheet, only his bloodless arm exposed. The wind is howling around us, the rain bounces off the roof and the lights go down. There’s a deafening crack of thunder and the dead man rises and the story begins.
A number of pupils from a local grammar school take up the first four rows and we take the seats above, a well filled house and there’s not a sound. Banquo greets us as if we’ve known each other for ever, in fact we take on the role of Macbeth at certain places as he goes through the events in Scotland during the reign of Duncan and the rise and rise of Macbeth. Banquo is Macbeth’s best friend and this is his story, his dreadful experience of evil, ambition and power. In the telling Banquo introduces us to various characters. They speak Shakespeare’s words, Macbeth himself, his scheming wife, King Duncan, the three witches and Macduff. Each scenario is heralded with what sounds like the distorted crack of a rifle shot, at times a bell tolls, voices fill the air and crowds cheer, suspiciously like an Scottish rugby crowd welcoming their team singing ‘Flower of Scotland’! As the story unfolds, I certainly begin to understand Shakespeare’s famous tragedy as never before. The torment of Banquo as he watches Macbeth murder and plot and fulfill the predictions of the three witches. What, he asks, if those witches had spoken to him instead of Macbeth that night on the heath, he might have become King of Scotland, imagine he says how different the story would be – or would it? This play throws questions out all over the place so it’s stimulating and thought provoking.
It’s also a very bloody monologue, quite literally. The bucket contains entrails and gore and Banquo ends up a blood soaked ghost, murdered by his best friend. It sounds very black but there is humour too. Michael Patrick, from Northern Ireland now based in London, is an experienced actor and a natural story teller, he invades the whole stage as he recounts what happened during those dark days, everyone including usually restless teenagers, were riveted by his performance. Written by Tim Crouch and sensitively directed by Oisin Kearney this is an outstanding piece of theatre. The timing, the sound effects, the lighting all come together, sadly only for three performances, last Thursday evening, Friday matinee and evening performance. It’s such a pity because this is theatre at its best. Watch out for a return visit.
See For Yourself
The night before I didn’t enjoy the play so much. Almost two and a half hours, quick fire script looking at life in Northern Ireland through the experience of a young mother whose child is trapped down a hole in the mountain side. There is a feeling that she, or her husband, has placed the child there in a attempt to recreate what happened to her when she was a child, trapped underground and a worldwide news story with plenty of financial benefits, fame as well as fortune. But reaction from local people is slow, they are suspicious.
The press are there, the television journalist is attentive – until word comes through there’s a child in trouble in Greece. They sniff a bigger story so the media pack up and jump a plane leaving the angry family in their wake. We never know whether the boy gets out but we endure some disturbing scenes on the way. Reflecting the Troubles and attitudes of politics the play is heavily allegorical, full of metaphor which is ok but the overwhelming use of the ‘f’ word and the ‘c’ word became like a stun gun against the temple. You may think it’s petty but I needed to know, was I over reacting? So I counted them in the script, I reached 114. For me it looses impact when such language is used to this extent, it’s a distraction. I took my straw poll and sadly it wasn’t positive but there again, you have to see for yourself and make up your own mind. Playwright Abbie Spallen has a fine portfolio of past work but for me this was too long, too involved and too dependent on shock value.
This from a man who has worked in theatre all his life. He hasn’t seen Lally the Scut and was talking in general.
“I continually question the use of bad language in contemporary drama. Even if a similar character in real life would use a lot of swear language the dynamics are totally different in a theatrical setting. Different relationships are in play when we are sitting in a theatre forced to watch and listen. On the street and in real life we have opportunity to object or walk away. I wish dramatists would remember this at times.” In fact, there is a choice in theatre too and some people chose to walk away.

A Model Lady of Fashion
Sadly Stella Goddard died during the week. Perhaps models and ‘It’ girls of today won’t recognise that name but she was a huge influence on young women in the 60s and 70s when she opened her model agency and changed the lives of many girls who wanted to present themselves with style and glamour.
Miss Goddard herself was the epitome of elegance, supremo of the Stella Goddard Model Agency and when it came to fashion Stella Goddard was the ultimate, tall and very beautiful. She ran her agency to provide models for show rooms, trade shows, modelling in restaurants and at venues like the King’s Hall during the Ideal Home show. I worked in Ulster Television in those days and we girls were young and we thought ourselves a gift for Stella’s books. One night we went to audition; only one of us passed the test, the rest were OK but not quite what Stella was looking for; and then it was my turn. Stella had a lovely home near Stormont in Belfast with an especially built extension where she positioned a ramp so the would-be model could walk from a side room, through the arch, onto a platform and down the cat walk. I did this, poised and smiling, every inch a glamorous clotheshorse, or so I thought. I waited for the gasp of delight and a contract. Instead, Stella looked at me sadly, shook her head and said, “My dear, with hips like those I could do nothing.” I was rejected there and then but I learned from Stella Goddard, poise, walking, turning, grooming and when we saw a Stella Goddard girl, we wanted to emulate her looks.
We asked for Stella’s tips. One layer of foundation, allow it to dry and then apply translucent powder and another layer of foundation on top gives a lovely finish and lasts all day and to get an extra glow after applying makeup, dab your cheeks with a dampened sponge. They bent the end of the mascara wand to give lashes an extra lift, or if using a brush and solid block they always used spit for adhesion and two applications for extra long lashes. The models perfected walking with a straight back by placing books on their heads and under each arm. When it came to bosoms, my friend Sheelagh used socks but the models lined their brassieres with sanitary towels to give upward thrust and separation, remember this was long before Gossard Wonder bras!
Elastoplast was used to prevent nipples sticking out and bra straps were never allowed to be on show. Before appearing anywhere, the last thing was to check back and front view in a long mirror for straight seams and no ladders. That was the Goddard code.
There was always something theatrical about Stella’s productions, especially the Ideal Home show at the King’s Hall in Belfast. Last time we talked Stella recalled those days. “It came about when Sydney Goorwitch of the Goorwitch fashion chain asked around for someone to compere the first Ideal Home after the war. I offered myself and arranged to bring models over from the Lucy Clayton school in London but it gave me the idea of grooming local girls for future shows and so my modelling and deportment agency was born.” Her girls, and boys, were instilled with the principles of punctuality, attention to hygiene, abstinence from alcohol when working and always carrying three pairs of shoes.
Amongst her leading ladies were Hilary Palmer, Susan Riddell and Maureen Martin, all with that X-factor and the main man, Brian Massey who went on to produce fashion and trade shows in London. Because she was the star of school productions in London, with the stage name Sophie Ives, later when she married Sophie Morrison, Stella was destined to become an actress and appear in the West End. Theatre was in her blood and her fashion shows at the Ideal Home, under the Goddard banner, always had a touch of theatricality about them.
She was the first to choreograph her models and use music to enhance the show. It was the days of roll-on corsets, living breathing girdles, and perforated latex under garments known and loved as Playtex, a company which had in the 1960s a contract with NASA to produce their space suits! Yet the girls all looked natural and graceful, although on one famous occasion a black wig was worn elsewhere than the head and a naughty flick of the skirt revealed far too much. Not a Stella moment but no wonder the crowds queued round the balcony for tickets. There were three or four shows each day, six days a week for three weeks.
So successful were they that before long London fashion houses were coming to Belfast to invite Stella’s models to their big shows, including one at Olympia in front of the Queen. This really put our local girls on the map and Stella and her partner Denise Lowry into the top contact books. Sizes were Standard, Junior Miss and Petit ranging from 12 to 16 and if you were over size 16 you certainly didn’t admit to it and you made sure to cut off the label. Styles were sophisticated, skirt lengths to the knee and pencil slim or full and swirling for informal occasions but always with stockings and high heels.
Stella made me laugh remembering one show in Ballymena where the owner of the shop wanted to run through the programme. “The clothes were beautiful and the audience wealthy wives. I told him the first round was cocktail wear – ‘no, no can’t mention alcohol’. Next round was ball gowns. ‘No, no, no balls it has to be evening wear’. We were back five years later and he gave me a nudge and said it was now alright to mention cocktails.” Presumably ball gowns were still beyond the pale.
On her 80th birthday in 2004 many of her girls threw a party for her in Culloden Hotel in Co Down and she flew over from her home in London to be wined and dined. She looked stunning, still doing little cameo roles on television and stage and amazingly all her models were still tall, svelte and elegant – and I still had my hips. Thanks for the memories Stella.
