Exciting times – snow, rain, hailstones, a super moon and an eclipse to look forward to.  March has that exciting mixture of lamb and lion and more than a hint of spring in the air.

But first and foremost, congratulations to Gail Walker who has been appointed Editor of the Belfast Telegraph. For the first time a woman will be heading up this daily newspaper, a big responsibility but one she is well able for. I’m not sure what I think about International Women’s Day and the like, I’m sure it highlights many aspects of the difficulties and sadnesses so many women experience and I’m totally sure women should support each other but having an international day is a pity, women’s points of view should be in the mainstream of our thinking all the time and perhaps making a deal of our gender one day a year will alienate some people, mostly men! In work I like to think of us all being trades people or professionals and for that reason I am so delighted that Gail has crashed through the glass ceiling on her own professional terms. Life in the media is far from easy these days, for most of us sitting behind a computer is one discipline, we are fairly anonymous but for our bylines but appearing on a television screen is quite another and brings with it additional pressures. The whole age agenda is so unfair and unpleasant, men can be mature and overweight and still get away with it, try putting a mature overweight woman anywhere a camera and, despite her skills and experience, the balloon goes up. There are a few exceptions of course, but they aren’t prime time.

I am sad to record the death of Jack Gamble, known throughout the world as John Gamble of Emerald Isle Books on Belfast’s Antrim Road where the beautiful dark wooden shelves held precious editions of rare and second hand books.

Jack was an Antiquarian Book Seller of great knowledge and generosity, a very private man with a wealth of stories to tell but always confidentially. How often I asked if I could put pen to paper about his life’s experiences but always a gentle ‘no’ with a winning smile so you could only be frustrated but never cross!

I enjoyed Good Vibrations last night on BBC 2, the story of Terri Hooley and his determination not to allow his dream to be crushed.  Sadly he’s back in hospital following a heart operation but I bet his postbag and face book pages are full of complimentary letters.  He’s some man, just never seems to loose his sense of humour or his optimism.  He’s had dreadfully tough times but he still likes to, in his words, ‘Share The Love’ and Belfast, his record shop and his family are the loves of his life.  Get fit and strong soon Terri and give them what for.
