Spent an interesting morning in Bangor at the library on Hamilton Road where there  the launch of the Aspects 2014 Irish Literature Festival was held.  What a gathering of talent from 25th September to 28th.  So many great events coming up, new writers and established authors, walking tours and workshops and the ‘In Conversation’ section throws up names like Simon Weston the Falklands veteran, Fergal Keane and Martin Bell and agony aunt Virginia Ironside with her one woman show Growing Old Disgracefully so, something for everyone.  The organisers haven’t forgotten  the children, they will have a Dr. Zeuss yoga workout to challenge them plus stories in the Once Upon A Time event.

Also had the pleasure of meeting up with old friend Mervyn Waugh recently.  Mervyn  came from BBC radio in London to Ulster Television in Belfast first as a camera man and then as a programme director.  Those days are behind him now as he concentrates on making harps.  Brilliant.  At his workshop near Crossgar he takes his model from Irish designs using a number of woods, sitka spruce from northern Canada, cedar from Europe sometimes rosewood often walnut and and maple.  The strings are made to his specification in America and the end product is much sought after by musicians and teachers.  This is the man who made a Clutton Fred aeroplane named after the former RAF officer Fred Clutton.  This he did in his garage when he lived in Finaghy and to prove the sturdy construction of this single seater, he flew it all over the country, flying jacket and goggles, open cockpit so he could smell the grass as he swooped low over the fields.

Loved the opening of the Commonwealth Games last night.  My brother lives in Edinburgh so we send texts backwards and forwards giving points of view.  I like the kilts of the Scottish team, he said there was a real furorey over the outfit – much criticism to put it mildly.  We didn’t like Rod Stewart who despite trying hard has lost his sex appeal and we agreed that Susan Boyle was hung out to dry, so unfair to leave there there so exposed with a single piano and a man who stomped out the beat.  She would have been so much better and at home had she been allowed to sing along with the pipe band at least for the first few verses of Mull of Kintyre.   All was nothing until the struggle over the Queen’s baton to get her message out – when they did she didn’t even open it!  She’s a great girl.
